Giants of the shoreline

Description

A couple of spotted screechers are dwarfed by the giant marine iguana mother and one of her children.

Spotted screechers can grow up to one meter in lenght. They use their legs to propel themselves forward, while the small flippers in front act as rudders.

Despite being ectothermic animals, the giant  marine iguana can spend a lot of  time in the ocean diving for algae due to the higher water temperature. In the morning, they bask in the sun to warm up. During the breeding season males assemble large harems of females, which they guard aggressively against rivals. Adult males are up to 6 meters long and weigh up to one ton.
They are rather clumsy-looking on land and drag their enormous bodies over the ground because their limbs are too weak to carry their weight.
