Description

Slowly gliding through the open oceans, Forficirhynchus infractus is a medium-sized reptile within the branchicauda family, which is named after their prolapsed branched cloaca. This eponymous anatomical feature enables them to extract dissolved oxygen from the waters surrounding them and grants them the ability to breathe underwater. Due to this, these turtles were able to conquer a plethora of aquatic habitats, ranging from shallow waters to the deep sea.

F. infractus are a blueish grey in coloration with a brighter underside, camouflaging them from above as well as from below. The pattern on their soft shell gives it a cracked appearance – hence their name. Adults can reach a maximum length of two meters, with no size difference between the two sexes. Their large head makes up about a third of their total length and is equipped with a powerful shearing beak. Being predominantly herbivorous, their diet mostly consists of algae and sea grasses, only rarely feeding on invertebrates for additional sustenance.
